Main Idea

Knowing God's greatness and grace moves us from hiding from him to inviting him to search our hearts and lead our lives.

Pastor O approaches Psalm 139 as a journey from uneasiness about being fully known to a willing invitation for God to search the heart. Knowing theological facts about God is only the beginning. Our fears and experiences can distort how we understand his motives, so the question is how his character changes our relationship with him.

The psalm reveals God's complete knowledge, his presence wherever we go, and his power in forming us in the womb. What can initially feel intimidating becomes deeply comforting: even darkness cannot hide us from him, and his hand can guide and hold us there. The One who knows our failures and motives also loves us, giving us freedom to love and forgive others.

The final movement brings the message home. Pastor O contrasts David's appeal against the wicked with his closing prayer for God to examine his own heart. God's greatness is not a tool for advancing our agenda. His grace invites humility, teachability, and personal transformation. We can still ask him to change our circumstances while also asking him to purify our motives and bring our lives into line with his purposes.
