Message Summary

Be Graciously Truthful

Pastor Jeff opens a series on life in the new self with a call to be graciously truthful: put away deception and use words that heal, strengthen, and build trust.

Core Message

Because we belong to one another in Christ, our words should build truth, trust, and wholeness.

Pastor Jeff begins with the call in Ephesians 4:22–24 to lay aside the old self, be renewed in the mind, and put on the new self. The commands that follow are a response to God's acceptance, rather than a way to earn it. Christian life grows from the Holy Spirit's resources within us into consistent outward obedience, even when obedience is difficult.

This week's focus is Ephesians 4:25: put away falsehood and speak truthfully with your neighbor. Deception can involve more than an outright lie. Hidden motives, deliberate omissions, evasive answers, exaggeration, and manipulation can also keep another person from understanding what is true. Pastor Jeff calls for speech that is honest, accurate, and free of a hidden agenda.

Truthfulness also requires love, wisdom, and discretion. Truth should help heal and strengthen people, so we need to distinguish facts from opinions, ask for clarification, and resist speaking out of accumulated frustration. Honest communication does not require sharing every private detail or intruding into someone else's life. Healthy boundaries, respectful timing, and appropriate self-disclosure help truth serve the relationship.

The message ends with the reason Paul gives: we are members of one another. Lies erode trust, damage relationships, and trouble the conscience. We can acknowledge our own habits and motives, ask God for forgiveness and inner healing, and commit to truthful speech with accountability before him and others. The goal is a life of integrity shaped by the Spirit and a community where people can trust one another.

Summary

Key Movements in the Message

Live From the New Self

God's acceptance comes first. Respond to his grace by drawing on the Holy Spirit's resources and allowing inward renewal to shape everyday behavior.

Lay Aside Every Form of Deception

Look beyond literal false statements. Examine hidden agendas, misleading omissions, calculated ambiguity, exaggeration, and attempts to control another person.

Let Truth Heal and Strengthen

Separate your preferences and opinions from facts. Leave room for misunderstanding, ask questions, and choose words and a tone that serve communication rather than injury.

Use Wisdom and Healthy Boundaries

Be honest without assuming every person needs every private detail. Match self-disclosure to the relationship, respect another person's privacy, and offer a gentle response that de-escalates anger.

Remember That We Belong to One Another

Love extends beyond the people who are easy for us to love. Belonging to the body of Christ brings a responsibility to be trustworthy and to guard relationships from gossip, slander, and double talk.

Repent and Seek Wholeness

Name the habits, fears, pride, or pain that lead you away from truth. Ask God for forgiveness and healing, and choose truthful, kind speech with accountability instead of dismissing deception as a small matter.

Closing Invitation

Ask the Spirit to shape your heart and your words.

Pastor Jeff closes by praying that the Holy Spirit would apply God's Word at the deepest level of each person's life. The response is to lay aside the old self, put on the new, and receive the righteousness and wholeness God provides.

Bring your motives and speech honestly before the Lord. Ask for forgiveness where you have misled others, for healing where hurt has shaped your reactions, and for help to speak with truth, wisdom, kindness, and accountability.
